The General Covid19 Thread
Mad_Cyril Reading these vaccine shenanigans not make anyone think about the poorer countries / people?
There’s the COVAX process, designed to ensure at least a minimum level of vaccination (20 or 25% of the population from memory) in developing countries. Part funded by global Government contributions (of which the UK has contributed c. 30% thus far), part funded by the WHO, and part funded by philanthropy. Bill Gates unsurprisingly is the single biggest personal donor thus far, cos you know - control via vaccines innit?
LT42 Surely the finger pointing should be at Astra Zeneca who’ve lined their pockets from 2 seperate deals
Astra Zeneca’s vaccine is priced at c. $4 per jab. As Grant says above, they’ve said they will not make a profit from the vaccine whilst we remain under pandemic conditions. Contrast that with the Pfizer vaccine ($20 per hit) and Moderna Vaccine ($33 per hit). Even the Russian space vaccine is c. 2-3x the price of Astra Zeneca’s. How, exactly, that equates to their having ‘lined their pockets’ I’m not sure…
Promising or “best endeavours” as per the wording in the contract?
No one is disputing something has majorly fucked up with the production - it obviously has.
Whilst everyone focuses on this war with AstraZeneca, their eyes are not on the real issue, which was the EU strategy and putting money and funding for Sanofi before lives
LT42 Fair enough.
And from my dealings with pharma companies over the years, their doing something and not making a profit is just about as close to doing something out of the goodness of their hearts that they can get. I have an agreement with my CEO that I don’t have to do any work with pharma companies or big tobacco. Or Huawei. All cunts.
Yes Sanofi are now using their factory to supply the Pfizer vaccine.
What’s interesting is that Moderna have also cut their deliveries to the EU by 20% over the last few days. Will the EU response be the same?

So by country geographical size and population you can gauge covid deaths?
That proves absolutely nothing.
The death toll in the UK is a fucking disgrace whatever way you want to look at it. The main reason the Government have got their shit together on the vaccine front is because it’s a last roll of the dice to get something right

Amps It’s not that simple though is it. Our population is exceptionally unhealthy when compared to the Japanese. Japans obesity levels are among the lowest in the world (3.2%) whereas 62% of UK adults are obese. Combine that with a society that is far more compliant, more deferential to authority, wears masks on public transport when they have colds and you’ve got four major differentials right there. And yes, I do know the Japanese better than most Brits, having visited the beautiful country four times in the past six years

Is right. We’ve also got tons of bellends saying it’s all a hoax, who won’t mask up, or at least keep physical distance in shops too. As stated before, I go to the shops twice a week (a proper supermarket shop, and an interim trip to the bakery for a restock of fresh bread), and still I see it everywhere. Asda is my closest supermarket but I won’t go in there because most of the customers are scumbags and the staff don’t give a fuck (and who could blame them when they’ve probably been threatened several times by dickhead customers?) so I travel a little further to Tesco or Morrison’s, where the staff at least try to remind people to keep some distance.
People like that (especially fit and healthy dickheads like Laurence Fox, 40 year old males and so on) would be seriously shunned in a society like Japan’s, and in China where people are less polite, they would soon have a gang around them ready to beat the shit out of them for not complying. There’s a lot wrong with those societies, but at least people seem to be saying “get through this and then we’ll talk about whether masks and distancing make any difference later”.
The UK death toll is in line with many other western countries of similar ilk so to blame the incumbent political party completely is harsh.
They could have done better and so could
many other governments, that much is true.
Im surprised it isn’t worse given the shit state of people health in this country!
Lads, lads, lads, chillax! It’s a cheap shot at the Tories, who love to use such figures in their Covid defence, take it for what it is and enjoy!
Also, if you know your population is made it of daft fatties who won’t listen to a word you say, shirley as a government you should factor that into your response?
Hursty should’ve locked down earlier, should enforce rules, shouldn’t have allowed households to mix at Christmas. Just three things that would’ve saved tens of thousands of lives, Hursty.

Add borders to that.
Travel corridors my arse

I’m sure you mean well, H, but that paragraph makes no sense. There aren’t many Govts in the world who can say they’ve handled this the correct way, those that haven’t handled it well deserve all the blame they get, particularly those in Western Europe.
