Department of Homeland Security officials termed the killing “an act of domestic terrorism.” anyway.

That happened well before the planned protest and locally there’s questions as to if it was related at all. Oakland does have a very high crime rate so these things do happen irrespective of larger, nationwide issues. DHS will often label something in order to quickly allocate resources. It’s like when the mayor declares something a “disaster.” They can then bypass many bureaucratic hoops, like needing Board of Supervisor approval to allocate funding.

I’m not saying either way in this instance. Just pumping the breaks on the assumptions.

I was just pointing out that, contrary to what had been inferred in your earlier post, that black people aren’t the only victims of police brutality in the US. This statement neither proves or disproves that racism is or isn’t an issue with the US Police.

Does it really matter that it happened before the planned protest? I’m not jumping to any assumptions in this case either though btw, as you say there isn’t enough known yet about it. I was making LT aware of it and questioning if it could have been deemed a serious enough incident regardless.

It does to me, yeah. This most certainly won’t mean much to you, but having spent a lot of time in Oakland in the past 10 years…tying this to the protest just doesn’t quite pass the smell test for me. The violent protesters, most from out of town, didn’t show up until much later in the night. Walking around yesterday you could see the progression through the night just on the building graffiti. Closer downtown was a lot of “BLM” and the like. As they moved up Broadway to 19th, there was more FTP and ACAB, et cetera. As I walked towards 27th, it was all anarchy this, capitalism that. The protest was about police violence. The riot was very different. The protest was peaceful, if angry. The riot compromised all that.

jonattonyeah I’m still just curious what difference you think it would make if the perpetrator was, say, a renegade doing it as an act of revenge, as opposed to, say, a renegade that had also been at some point part of the planned protest and then still did it as an act of revenge?

I’m aware that the perpetrator and motive are not yet known. I’m still just not quite sure what the relevance is to the protest? Surely the person’s identity and motive are more important?

Okay, now that actually is a fair question based on the thread of conversation. It also doesn’t leadingly insinuate my holding of a position which I’d never previously claimed. Well done.

However, it’s a question which has way too many layers for me to answer more fully here. Plus I’m not going to give some of you more excuses to misrepresent me on this.

Cops sign up to do a dangerous job. It’s why they are so well compensated and literally allowed to murder people. Comparing violence done to police vs violence done by police is not apples to apples.
