Amps That’s essentially what I do, I think of the sounds like layers and group them accordingly. Process each sound individually, then together as a group, then again on a pre-master chain. Discovering sends (especially for reverbs/delays) to help everything fit together in the same space made a huge leap in quality for me.
If you want to get a little more complicated, I also group my return tracks and process them together. Sometimes to clean up a mix, but also for glue and modulation.
For me, it’s all about aesthetic and I try to make all my decisions with that in mind. If what I’m adding sounds good, but doesn’t fit the aesthetic, I’ll save the patch in a folder and delete it from the project right away. That keeps me focused and gives me a more consistent end sound.
