mono-stereo yeah it’s hit and miss, but the right ones sound just as good as anything analog. i’m looking specifically at the space echo emu, bus force, and the spring/plate reverbs. for $150, the rest is a bonus if they’re good.

here’s my new ep, it’ll be out on all the regular streaming services by tomorrow. instead of my usual dub, this is more upbeat detroit-influenced techno. just about every sound came from the dfam, tracked live into ableton, then processed. these are the first three records i started after picking up the dfam, just to see what it could do, and it was a ton of fun to make. hope you like it, thanks for checking it out.

i’ll definitely be writing more tracks like this. was knee deep in dub for so long, i wanted to push the tempo (i’ve actually done a couple of really dubby records around 135/136 bpm too), but i’ll put some together at a more reasonable pace. that dfam is a lot of fun and covers lots of sonic territory. these were the first three i started with it just to see what it could do.

Watching this got me thinking that maybe the reason the likes of Beatport are awash with 90% bilge is because a majority of tracks are made by kids who just know how to manipulate software rather than being actual musicians.

LT42 that sums me up pretty well. 🤣 i’m the joe rogan of music, not very good at it, but hopefully i work hard enough to be decent at it eventually.

on a side note, some of this guy’s videos are pretty helpful.

LT42 thanks for that, but i’m definitely in that category. i have no musical talent, i just enjoy making it as i find it really meditative and it’s a real challenge mentally.

LT42 yeah if you actually needed theory to write techno, i’d be in a heap of trouble. i can go as far as creating simple chords, tuning drums, and staying in key, but that’s about it.

…so after flogging my TR8 about a year ago, finally went back in for the TR8s. Similar to programme, but massive step-up in possibilities. Loving messing about with imported synth samples and the motion recording is a game changer

Unbroken1 i’ve been looking at the tr8s since it came out, looks like a great foundation drum machine and playing samples opens it right up. are you using it for the studio or incorporating it into live sets?

303abuser …mainly for in the studio, but I did end up running the TR8 through the DJ mixer last time so you never know. Even with the addition of some super-basic melodic elements, like a single pad or a stab, it feels much more like something I could imagine playing live with now, actually think the sound is better than the TR8 too.

Lovely remixes mate, enjoying the first one a lot… sounds like something from one of those Deep & Dark comps on Seven Villas. You listened to any of Pablo Bolivar’s streams/sets?

i think it’s two original tracks and 16 remixes, free or pay what you want to support the label …

303abuser Thmbsup. Only reflection on the mix is that the ‘snare’ click cuts through the mixes. Could possibly have dialled the initial transients down a little using a transient designer.

Unbroken1 yeah it looks much better suited for live than the original tr8, really easy to either build a live set around or use it as a dj tool in more minimal sets.

and thanks, i left the noise/tape hiss way up on this one, i really like the texture and atmosphere it adds. funny you mention it, i was listening to the nae:tek deep & dark, dub techno mixes last week. i haven’t listened to his sets, but i’m a huge fan of pablo bolivar’s productions, need to give his live stuff a listen.
