I think a better thread would be decent places to live in the UK with thriving local job markets ….

The UK was very quick on the offshoring initiative, thinking those displaced would move up the food chain , but automation and increased competition put pay to that .

in fairness to the US, they have protected US jobs to a better degree than the UK. In my industry US functions need controls in the US, not India . As a result many more operations / entry level jobs here leading to thriving local regions

One example is Nashville . 10 yrs ago a no go zone. Now Amazon , UBS and Alliance Bernstein to name a few moving ops jobs down there . Don’t see similar initiatives happening in the UK

We do have the benefit of land and a government that is so daftly pro-corporation it makes things a bit easier from a jobs standpoint. Living on the dole here is also pretty damn miserable (not that it’s a picnic over there).

But I agree this thread and other things I’ve read…it sure seems like the UK has just given up on many people and many locales.

Places like Nashville have benefited from the impossible housing prices in the “top tier” cities like NYC, Boston SF, LA, Seattle…go on down the line. One of the frustrating thing living in the Bay has been the complete demolition of culture by tech. Crazy expensive and now boring to boot. There’s little reason these companies can’t expand to more-needy cities, they just don’t (to everyone’s detriment). Hopefully that’ll change post-COVID.

Sectarianism doesn’t necessarily result in outright violence. The majority of people, even in Glasgow, are tempered somewhat by the likelihood of arrest and doing time for unprovoked violence, which you get the book thrown at you for. For most people, even hard cunts, there is the calculation of ‘do I potentially do time here just to look like a bit of a psycho?’

We still have orange marches around here (the north west), the only part of England that has them.

There are thousands of people who travel over from Belfast for rangers and celtic games. I used to go to some games when I was younger. Where I grew up it was expected that you supported rangers and hated fenians. I don’t care what anyone says, it was drugs that ended the troubles here. Thousands of teenagers all heading out to the same raves in the 90s and realising we are all actually the same. The paramilitaries hated that. I stopped going over to rangers games when I was around 18. Found a new crowd of mates as well. If you group together a load of people with hard line views, fire beer and coke into the mix, it doesn’t take much to whip up a mob mentality, dave. When I was about 14 I used to go watch a local team called linfield. I watched some absolutely brutal hidings in the centre of Belfast.

I appreciate that and the effect of a mob frenzy is undoubtedly true. But if you look at the crime statistics in the UK, and it appears they hold true for Scotland as well, ‘non-sexual crimes of violence’ have been falling for years, and when they are committed they are more likely to be tied to a robbery.

i.e. you’re much less likely to get chinned for no reason than you were in the 80s and 90s because CCTV makes apprehension and prosecution likelier, and judges tend to throw the book at unprovoked violence (‘he was wearing the wrong shirt’ is no defence). So there is normally some tangible gain to be had that’s associated with the violent act (a robbery or a rape).

Thats logic and reason, dave. Having grown up in Belfast I can tell you there is no logic or reason involved when it comes to shit like that. Just hatred. It is definitely less prevalent than it was 20 or 30 years ago. That episode I mentioned in Glasgow was 10 years ago too.
