Dictators - The Cult of Personality in the Twentieth Century’ by Frank Dikötter

An overview of history’s most famous psychopaths, where they came from and how they went about their business. Could do with a few more specifics in places but is fairly interesting even if just from a geopolitical view.

Spoiler alert, they were all bat shit crazy ego maniacs clinging to power at every turn.

Amps there’s a book from a good while back called Talk of the Devil where the author interviews 7 dictators like Jaruzelski and Idi Amin…. Well worth the download - very memorable book for me

Any opinions / recommendations on Robert Harris? Ides of March made me order his Cicero-trilogy omnibus. 1100 pages in hard cover. It will be fun to carry that to work and back to read on my lunch break.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve read this. Definitely a comfort read every time.

Finished ‘Children of Memory’ - decent - AT manages to take things in a fresh direction while asking some big sci fi questions. For story reasons, the book is a bit of a slog to get through the first 2/3rds and I was thinking ‘I hope the payoff at the end is worth it’ and TBF, he pretty much sticks the landing and it’s got some lovely profundity going on but for reasons which I won’t spoil, it’s not the almost certainly not the ending of the series and the reason why isn’t the most satisfying. 8 corvids / 10

Pretty sure someone recommended the Seth Rogan book in this thread… enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s Super Bad in the first half, and then transitions into hilarious Hollywood stories and his drug fueled escapades. Does get a bit Jew preachy at the end, but nothing sanctimonious. You can definitely hear him speak when you read this, and without exaggerating, I had plenty of lol moments. Loved the bit about Nic Cage. If you’re not into his or Judd Apatow movies, I’d probably skip this.
