Since this appears to be taking over the world, I am making a serious attempt to acquaint myself.

I don’t like what I’m hearing.

Juice Wrld (now brown bread, no great loss by the sounds of things)…
I liked the intro bars which sounded like Nas, absolutely hated the lyrics: “You found another one, but I am the better one” - sounds like something D4NNY would have written.

Lil Peep - also brown bread.
This was miserable but the tune was better as it sounds like some of Nirvana’s darker/slower tracks, one of his influences apparently. Dresses like a complete idiot.

XXXTentacion - also brown bread.
This guy was a real piece of shit, it seems:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jun/30/xxtentacion-cult-how-fans-pay-tribute-to-an-abusive-rapper

Lil Peep is very dead so no need to worry about him anymore.

There’s a Netflix doc about him. It was surprisingly good.

The process for all the genres artists seems to be release some shoddily-produced tracks and videos, get to the cusp of stardom, get dead, become huge.

        bosstrabs

The best way to get great is get good and then get dead.

Randy Rhoads was fine. But then he died and all of a sudden he’s a legend. Dying is the way forward.

it’s all shit, there’s little discussion necessary. garbage pop music for kids and people with no appreciation for proper hip hop or rap.

Post Malone, I was already familiar with (he’s somewhat inescapable)…
This is one of the better offerings from the genre - or is it just someone appropriating the style? I’m not sure he is ‘proper’ because he’s not dead.

What’s with everyone having terrible face tattoos?

          Like ‘Lyrical Lemonade’

          Going to be using that.

303abuser it’s all shit, there’s little discussion necessary. garbage pop music for kids

My step-dad (a prog rock fan) still pretty much says that of punk, decades on, whenever it comes on TOTP II.

The greatest prog rock band of all time?

            Trisco.

            bosstrabs Is it Mumble Rap?

I don’t know. I always just looped him in with the others ’cause of him making his name on Soundcloud and YouTube. But yeah he was a good one.

jonattonyeah I don’t know. I always just looped him in with the others ’cause of him making his name on Soundcloud and YouTube. But yeah he was a good one.

I don’t think it is. It sounds like he’s influenced by De La Soul/Naughty By Nature/Skee-Lo etc.

bosstrabs i think i’m semi aware of when i’m just acting like the old guy shaking his fists at the kids, but i don’t think this is one of those times. if you can’t understand the mc and they have nothing to say in the first place, what’s the point? these guys make bob dylan sound like a formal orator.

There must be something worth digging out of the genre.

I think that Lil Peep track is quite interesting, although like I said, the track is just a direct lift of Nirvana with rap over the top.

bosstrabs i’m going to assume there’s nothing. why waste your time when there’s so much other good music out there? this is the dub step of hip hop.

303abuser i’m going to assume there’s nothing. why waste your time

                    For a briefly interesting diversion?

So at least I know who is who when I hear these names mentioned?

I mean, why not waste your time listening to a genre you wouldn’t normally listen to?

Future and Lil Uzi Vert is as much as I know in this genre: -

This dude is a local legend. BASED GOD. He’s great ’cause you can’t ever tell when he’s being serious or not - whether he’s making fun of Rap, or….I don’t even know. Not sure if it falls in the “mumble” genre but he’s definitely a product of YouTube. He was putting out videos once a week for a while there - about Wonton Soup and Ellen Degenerous.

bosstrabs Since this appears to be taking over the world,

You what? The clue is partly in the rest of your post - it’s been and waned already, you’re at least 3 years late.

Also, of all the tracks and artists to zone in on from the sound, you’ve managed to find some shite ones (of which there are a lot tbf); still, it’s therefore no wonder you don’t like what you’re hearing. Juice Wrld and Lil Peep just had shit songs full stop, and xxxtentacion only had one half-decent song ‘Sad’.

On the subject though, I quite liked this from the so-called genre (well, mostly the beat).

                        Again, 4 years old already

Also, I think this was classified as soundcloud/mumble rap.

It’s legit quality though, I’m not ashamed to say I listened to it a lot. Again, 4 years old though already, ha:

Fuck off Hugo you absolute bellend.

‘Taking over the world’ in the sense that it’s played on Radio 1 all the time and my teenage neighbour blasts Juice WRLD out of his window.

Maybe it was all over 3 years ago in your hyper-bleeding-edge Berlin world where everything’s already passe two minutes before its seminal track has even been conceived.

bosstrabs where everything’s already passe two minutes before its seminal track has even been conceived.

The genre’s seminal tracks were all released 2017->H1 2018.

hugopal The genre’s seminal tracks were all released 2017->H1 2018.

So my timescale of you being interested in it to becoming an absolute bellend about it is roughly correct.

God, I wish they’d rebuild the Berlin Wall with you on the wrong side of it.

bosstrabs I still listen to that Lil Uzi Vert track above sometimes, and one or two of his more recent things, but that’s still possible to do while recognising that clearly the thing and the artists associated with it did indeed peak 2017-H1 2018.

All the artists you and I have named released their biggest tracks during that period, and all the ones you named are since dead so they’re obviously completely “over”.

Don’t get salty because you and whatever backwater you’re in are so late to find things out.

bosstrabs which side would that be? There are loads of people here who seem as if they’d rather be living in the GDR (not me though obvs).

hugopal Don’t get salty because you and whatever backwater you’re in are so late to find things out.

Sorry, it didn’t even cross my radar as I was living in Beijing, which has an organic, varied and interesting music scene of its own.

bosstrabs then why not make a thread about that if you’re so au fait with it?

Most of the music from China I’ve happened across here has rather come from Shanghai, e.g. Genome 6.66 Mbp.

hugopal Don’t get salty because you and whatever backwater you’re in are so late to find things out.

                                    It’s called the North Hugo.

bosstrabs fair enough if you find it interesting. i think it’s music for children and has no redeeming qualities.

jonattonyeah yep and i listened to a lot of shitty music. then i grew out of it. to each their own of course, but mumble rap is garbage, as far as i’m concerned.

This has been a thoroughly enlightening discussion.

Between 303abuser sauntering in repeatedly just to declare any listening to the genre ‘pointless’, Jonattan posting stuff that isn’t even of the genre, and Hugo dismissively saying we’re all too late to even bother discussing a genre that’s now 4 years old, you can see why I would be keen to share the fruits of the Beijing music scene.

bosstrabs do you expect different bringing up a genre that doesn’t even remotely interest most of the people on the board? and i stated my opinion once, the other two were replies, hence the term discussion. i’ll give you a lol for starting the thread then complaining about the few of us willing to engage you.
