Since this appears to be taking over the world, I am making a serious attempt to acquaint myself.

I don’t like what I’m hearing.

Juice Wrld (now brown bread, no great loss by the sounds of things)…
I liked the intro bars which sounded like Nas, absolutely hated the lyrics: “You found another one, but I am the better one” - sounds like something D4NNY would have written.

Lil Peep - also brown bread.
This was miserable but the tune was better as it sounds like some of Nirvana’s darker/slower tracks, one of his influences apparently. Dresses like a complete idiot.

XXXTentacion - also brown bread.

You what? The clue is partly in the rest of your post - it’s been and waned already, you’re at least 3 years late.

Also, of all the tracks and artists to zone in on from the sound, you’ve managed to find some shite ones (of which there are a lot tbf); still, it’s therefore no wonder you don’t like what you’re hearing. Juice Wrld and Lil Peep just had shit songs full stop, and xxxtentacion only had one half-decent song ‘Sad’.

Post Malone, I was already familiar with (he’s somewhat inescapable)…
This is one of the better offerings from the genre - or is it just someone appropriating the style? I’m not sure he is ‘proper’ because he’s not dead.

bosstrabs i think i’m semi aware of when i’m just acting like the old guy shaking his fists at the kids, but i don’t think this is one of those times. if you can’t understand the mc and they have nothing to say in the first place, what’s the point? these guys make bob dylan sound like a formal orator.

I don’t think it is. It sounds like he’s influenced by De La Soul/Naughty By Nature/Skee-Lo etc.

There must be something worth digging out of the genre.

I think that Lil Peep track is quite interesting, although like I said, the track is just a direct lift of Nirvana with rap over the top.
