Prince died 5 years ago today, bloody hell. Fucking love a bit of Prince me.

Prince top 5s?

Albums
Around the World in a Day
Lovesexy
Sign o’ the Times
Dirty Mind
Purple Rain

Singles
When You Were Mine
Sometimes it Snows in April
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
Darling Nikki
Paisley Park
Raspberry Beret

I cheated with six on the singles.

Sign of the Times head and shoulders above the rest as a complete album.

Could choose any 3 or 4 albums in any given order below that.

Starfish and Coffee an underrated track. It’s about autism for those who hadn’t guessed - GOOD FACTOID.

Huge fan, one of the best gigs I went to was him at The Roundhouse. He did 2 gigs one after the other in the venue, each one well over 2 hours. Amazing performer

hard to pick a 5, anything from Sign O The Times. The Cross a particular favourite

Yup, Huge Fan here too. Bob George from the Black Album is such a great track too. I absolutely love the erotic undercurrent of the whole Dirty Mind Album. Personal favourites are Anna Stesia from LoveSexy, such a great track live. There’s a fantastic video of Price blowing everyone away with While my guitar gently weeps too. As others have said, Sign of the Times is his most complete album. I have a soft spot for Sometimes it snows in April off Parade too.

Saw him three times - Lovesexy and Nude Tours and then that crap medley thing he did at the O2

Went to Paisley Park a few years ago with the missus when we were doing a Chicago/Minneapolis trip - was cracking. Upset people shuffling around was a bit odd mind.

I better not see that stupid fucking Kevin Smith video in here.

ArchimedesQ great video, he pisses all over the others, then smoothly launches his guitar into the crowd at the end.

I was in Berlin when he died, was proper gutted

It’s such a weird looking “house”. It looks like a Virgin media call centre, would love to see inside natch.

It feels like some waste when an artist of that magnitude dies in such pathetic circumstances that could’ve and should’ve been avoided.

RichM He did 2 gigs one after the other in the venue, each one well over 2 hours. Amazing performer

Was recently listening to an interview with his longest serving personal assistant. She was with him for pretty much all of the peak years. 1982-1992, or something like that. The topic of how he was supposed to be a monster to work for came up, which she didn’t dispute at all. But what she did say was he was so difficult to work for because he quite literally never stopped working. She said he would record music all of the time he wasn’t rehearsing. All of it. She had an anecdote of him lecturing the crew about what an important thing a record contract was, and how they all needed to respect and honor it. LOL! According to her he would take a hand full of 20 minute breaks, and even then he would go roller skate or play ping pong, and make sure multiple people were there to capture the magic. I don’t doubt he was a totally insane person, and impossible to work for/with but I have to ask: as a general fan of art isn’t this what you want your artists to act like? I guess it doesn’t really matter, if the output is there, but let’s be honest; most of the time it is not. The George Harrison vid is the perfect example. He is amongst some complete heavy weights up there, and he out classes all of them with fucking ease. The dude never stopped to dine out on any single tune or release, and that is beyond rare. RIP to an absolute titan.

Seems like Prince and I share the same Trojan work ethic.

Fuck thats a TL alright. Totally forgot about Under The Cherry Moon when doing my list.

Like all the best Djs, Prince saved his top gigs for London!

Always nice to see artists really turn up for third world crowds. Means a lot to the people.

Need to bring your A game here.

Not like in the States where you can play any old nonsense and the thickos lap it up.

A game is absolutely needed when performing for a bunch of blokes loaded with butties and stella.

Didnt he write hits for a multitide of artists also? He was basically a pocket sized rock of base speed.

LT42 oh yeah. He wrote for The Time, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Chaka Kahn…. Manic Monday is the one that is often brought up, but he wrote a shit load of other major hits. All at like the hight of his career too. I forget which one it was, but the artist said he called them and was like “I wrote something for you”… Think it was Love Song for Moadonna, but IDK.

edit that was Manic Monday. Called up the Bengals and said he was obsessed with their music and wrote a song for them.

zackster Mad buzzer and shows a really kind side to his character too. A genuine artist in the same bracket as Bowie. Theyre in short supply these days.

                LT42 Bowie

he is one of the only people that comes to mind when I think of someone like Prince, for sure.

coming up with the 5 best prince records is pretty impossible. i’m a big fan of his early stuff, so i’ll lean that way, in no particular order.

                1. pop life
                2. i feel for you
                3. why you wanna treat me so bad?
                4. when you were mine
                5. i wanna be your lover

honorable mentions to uptown, controversy, and i would die for you. the volume and quality of his output was nothing short of incredible.

303abuser might have been lockdown getting to me, but one of our few indoor gettogethers last summer was for the 4th of July. We ended up watching it and having a total blast.

zackster amazing album. Couldn’t he play some stupid amount of instruments too? Just picked them up, got the basics and then proceeded to jam like he had played it all his life. A major talent.

Can’t have a Prince thread without the Charlie Murphy story

                      Purple Rain
                      Sign of the Times
                      Dirty Mind
                      Parade
                      1999

                      The Beautiful ones
                      Erotic City
                      Controvery
                      Pop Life
                      Sign of the Times

Millsy yeah he played like sax, keys, drums, guitar and probably more shit too. I think it’s super respectable that he was such a beast guitar player, yet rarely featured massive solos on his albums. Like, compare that to someone like Eddie Van Halen, who I also love, but he quickly turned all of their output into “listen to me jam”.

zackster i haven’t seen it in at least 20 years, but i don’t remember enjoying it. maybe i’ll give it another go when i’m bored.

add 17 days to the list, that’s a great track too.

edit: the piano in this version …

A top 5 singles list is ridiculously difficult to compile. When you are omitting tracks like Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette and When Doves Cry, you know you have got a problem

                        alistair When Doves Cry

Difficult to nail down, but probably my fav Prince track.
