Most Chinese are unwilling to engage with foreigners nowadays about political topics, and actually my Chinese isn’t strong enough to have a sustained, serious conversation about this beyond general cliches the mainland Chinese always spout, such as ‘China and [insert other country] are as close as lips and teeth!’ (Actual meaning: we think they’re a pack of untrustworthy cunts but since we’re forced into an alliance of strategic convenience with them we will spout some banal platitude such as this).
