Martin L Gore turns 60 today. For people our age it was one of the three in the 80s, New Order, Pet Shop Boys or Depeche Mode. Most definitely DM for me. Everything they did after Ultra sort of blends in with each other in my mind, but they had on hell of a run from Some Great Reward to Ultra. 13 years of nothing but classic albums. Songs of Faith and Devotion remains my controversial favorite, but really anything they did between 1984 and 1997 was at worst good, if not great.

Actually liked them all: For me, JD/NO> DM> PSB
Homegrove love all three bands but NO would just about pip it for their run of brilliant albums between Movement and Technique. DM were excellent for longer and PSB were the best singles band between 85 and 91. Violator is my fave DM album and it would be a toss up between Halo, World in my eyes, behind the wheel and never let me down again as my favourite songs. Great band deserving of their two brilliant singles collections. Happy 60th MG
Yep, NO for me too but DM not far behind….with PSB bringing up the rear.
Songs of Faith and Devotion still sounds immense and unique.
My brother is good friends with Gore, spent a lot of time with him in Santa Barbara. An incredibly sound and down to earth chap.
It was Depeche Mode and U2 in the 80s for me, of course.
A lol for Pet Shop Boys.
Really? Thought everyone hated them now.
You can hate someone but still have respect for the artist

Violator is a tremendous album.
I was given a tour of the The Church Studio in Crouch End where it was recorded.

Have to say Exciter is seriously underrated. Handful of excellent tracks and Mark Bell’s production is
When shall we start posting Depeche Mode prog remixes?
Love Depeche Mode, but after Songs of Faith and Devotion, I pretty much stopped bothering. Though Songs of Faith and Devotion was a bit of a let down, but having revisited it after the last Depeche Mode thread (by the way, H), I love it.
