Sports you play as an adult
Millsy I actually find road running to be a bit dull unless I’m doing speed work. Trail running is a whole other thing though, it’s like being a kid and running through the woods, just with more eating.
Smallman1 It’s about the only time I listen to power prog now. And drum & bass is fantastic for tempo runs.
mono-stereo It’s not bad for your joints at all, as long as you run with good form.
Millsy I’ve only own one pair and that was before I really started running. Running through the trees, up and down hills, just being in nature while building fitness really is a lot of fun. At the volume I’m doing it can be a grind sometimes, but if you can train like a more reasonable human, it’s a great time.
303abuser Sounds like your nutrition is pretty sound, mine has been my achilles heal mainly because I never practice it during training, but I’m trying to make amends for it now. Tailwind does seem to be popular so will defo try that out.
With regards to volume, I don’t have any targets but I expect to be hitting north of 100k soon. I watched a vid the other day of a Brit marathon runner who clocks over 200k a week and he was saying others are doing up to 250k a week!
That is mental, but apparently its what it takes to get the results for marathon running.
I never run with tunes, but then I love being outside so its always a pleasure to be out
Lol!
Lol. Sean’s a trail runner?
And trigger pulled, natch!
Hursty Nutrition is one of the things I practice a lot and I really treat all of my long runs as logistical practice. Tailwind in one flask, nuun with added salt in another, and if it’s hot, just water in the 1.5L bladder. Slow drip calories and salt, drink based on my craving for plain water. When I got about 45k into the 50 last fall, all I really wanted to eat was chocolate and that was fine for that distance, but I know that won’t hold up over 100k.
I think for 50k and shorter distances, 100k per week is enough and strength training makes a huge difference. Lifting makes up for a lot of volume when you’re constantly climbing and descending. The idea of doing much more than I am now and maintaining any sort of life seems like a massive challenge and maybe not worth it.
And yeah, I run with music maybe half the time and when I do, I wear Shokz at low volume so I can still hear everything around me. I find the more I run, the less I need music. Information dense podcasts really do help pass the time quickly on long runs for me though.
Here’s the last update that no one asked for …
Ended up having to drop from the 100k to 50k distance because of a calf/tibial tendon issue that I’ve been dealing with since June. It forced me to drop the mileage on my two biggest training weeks and I wasn’t confident in medicating myself through a 16+ hour race.
After all that, I ran so well in the 50k. Last year it was 21 degrees and it took me just over 7 hours. This year it was 33 degrees at the peak and I finished in 6:39, ended up 18th overall out of 173 runners and I think 7th in age group. The heat caused some absolute carnage, especially for the 100k/100 mile runners, one person ended up in hospital and the dnf rate was the highest they’ve had in 25 years.
It was another really amazing experience, so happy that I got it done. 8 months of training was rough at times and I’m ready for a break, but the reward of finding out what I was capable of doing was totally worth it. I can’t recommend doing something like this enough.
Fair fucks mate. That’s very impressive.
Guaranteed!
And on a serious note, that is top effort, really is, well played that man!
