  • Hardest place you've ever lived?

I probably won’t be able to compete with some on here, but I lived in Canley, Coventry for a year as a student and it was pretty rough. Not the kind of place you’d really want to walk around at night, although it was mostly white trash scrotes hanging around rather than the genuine nasty gangster stuff (black vs Asian gangs) that went on in the really hard parts of the city.

This was one of our locals, which was absolutely rough as fuck, I only went in there once.

Haringey in the early ’90s. I had the best time of my life while living there but occasionally drifted into Winston Silcott territory. It always felt edgy at night.

I lived in the Mission in San Francisco back when it was a very rough, predominantly Mexican and Central American neighborhood. Loved it. Cheap, great weather, incredible food. Had a large one-bed a half block from Dolores Park for $1,200. Probably in the $4,000 range now - area has been totally gentrified. Lakeview in SF was also quite rough around the edges back then, where I lived after. But Oakland for sure now. But it’s fine if you know what you’re doing and don’t walk around looking like a mark. Also will say if you want to find trouble here, it’s not hard to find. But Deep East is something else. I wouldn’t recommend faffing about over that way.

I lived in St. Louis for a really long time. It’s a pretty violent place sometimes, but also really lovely too.

Probably good ol’ Allentown. Last summer was dubbed “the summer of violence ” when we had 10 murders in 3 months.

Throughout the multiple times I’ve lived here I’ve had 2 hand guns pulled on me. One was about 2 inches from my chest as the dude pinned me into my car and robbed both my girl friend and myself. I felt like such a pussy after that one.

There’s a reason East St Louis was chosen as the filming location for Escape From New York - after the fires they didn’t need to do much to create a destroyed city. Sad. I do hear the adult entertainment out there is great, though 🙂

Not ‘hard’ but ‘sketchy as fuck’ was Harehills in Leeds. It’s the BME (‘Black and mixed ethnicity’ as the council’s like to call it) area of Leeds but I think that’s kinda inaccurate - it was more ‘The loser degenerate’ area of Leeds. Junkies, prossies, gangs, benefit scroungers, the royal flush.

If you’re wondering how I ended up there - shifted to Leeds and had three weeks to find a place before my stuff got delivered - the actual houses there are lovely - proper four storey victorian decorative jobs. Seemed nice enough when I went for a visit - (at 10am on a Sunday morning :-\ - pretty sure Beirut is ok at 10am on a Sunday morning) so running out of time shifted in - along with three other guys who were in the same boat as me - out of town and didn’t know the areas to avoid. lol )

        Anyway, highlights include:

        • First night I was there a car pulled up outside, some lads got out and pelted next door with rocks and bricks until all the windows were put out. Then got in and fucked off.
        • The house I was in was bang opposite Potternewton park - nice greenery - also literally pitch black at night as there’s no lighting for a sq mile - they found a few bodies there over the time I was there - open the curtains to find the park sealed off with loads of the plod standing around while the CSI unit did it’s job. Fun.
        • Getting propositioned by prossies and skag dealers at 9am when going to the bus to work - always fun.
        • My all time fave - came home to find the police on my doorstep. Did the deep breath, ’good evening officer, I happen to live here, what’s the problem’ routine to which he said ’There’s been a robbery and we’re looking for witnesses but obviously you’ve only just got back.' It turned out someone ordered a pizza to the house next door. The dominos guy pulled up in a proper company decaled car, got out, went to the door with the pizza but left the keys in the car - someone got in and fucked off with it. lol. Makes me laugh thinking the poor cunt had to ring his boss going ’Well boss, I’ve lost the car. but the good news is, I’ve still got the pizza’ lol.

        Happy days.

Alias-The-Jester I would say ‘local’ as meaning in close proximity. Just because somewhere is local doesn’t mean you’re a regular.

I am aware that some people say ‘local’ meaning ‘local and my regular’

Forgot about the time my wife was attacked by a pitbull, at our last house. We were dog sitting her rents dog and one time when she was getting out of the car some dudes in the alley had a pitt off of a leash. It attacked Charlie, our dog, and all the dudes started chanting “fight fight!” My wife started kicking the dog so it turned on her. Drew blood and had to get a rabies shot. The guys with the dog moved out of their shit hole in the middle of the night, but kept coming around and keying our cars. That one was bad.

Was born in and spent my very early years in Tallaght, Dublin. Have been back since and it is a right shithole, and dangerous too. Got a taxi over there at Xmas 99 and the taxi driver wouldn’t let me get out until I was actually at the door of the place I was going to (I hadn’t been there in years and was planning on just hopping out and walking through the estate to get where I wanted)

I lived not too far away in Hyde Park while I was a student at Leeds. A large percentage of the population is students, so it probably wasn’t quite as sketchy, but it still got a lot of the spillage and typically features in the top 10 postcodes in the country for burglaries.

We were burgled twice in the 2 years I was there - once they smashed our front door in with what must have been some kind of battering ram while I was brushing my teeth in the first floor bathroom and then proceeded to quickly clear out our living room.

I never ventured as far as Harehills, but knew a few students that lived in Woodhouse and Chapeltown between where I was and there, and heard a few horror stories.

Never lived anywhere even remotely hard. I also have the benefit of my looks, which can give you a very different picture than the reality of my person, so never felt the least bit in danger the very few times I’ve been on the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak. Finland doesn’t really have that many of those either. The only things I can remember have been a few sketchy after parties in some (Finnish equivalent for) council flats where it has occured to me I don’t know who lives there.

Wally in the 80s the Harehiils Leeds fans carried their reputation before them as complete nut jobs. Fighting amongst themselves when there was no one else to fight with………

If you’re into meth addicts and white trash, then yes, the east side has you covered lol

Beirut is an unbelievably cool and friendly place mate.

Salford Precinct in the early 2000’s.

Armed teenagers beating the fuck out of people for fun.

                Rent was cheap like.
