And a big loss is Liotta. He played a good Roy DeMeo part in The Iceman too. Shite movie but still.

He’ll always be Henry Hill. Immortalised.

“Oh Henry. Oh Henry boy, the pipes the pipes are caaalling.”
(Shut the fuck up, Maury.)

jonattonyeah Cop Land was good man. Exactly what I remembered it to be. Not the best movie ever, but it doesn’t pretend to be. What a fucking cast, my god. Ray turning up at the end with the cig hanging off his bottom lip is exactly what I was after.

    Yeah, I enjoyed Cop Land.

But it was always somehow disappointingly less than the sum of its parts, like a lot of ensemble cast movies can be.

See also, from around the same time, ’Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead’ and ‘Heat’ runs

It’s crazy but Heat has continued to get better and better as years go bye. Heat 2, the book, comes out this summer as it happens.

Yeah it’s an enjoyable flick. Just one of those things where expectations are the mother of disappointment. Mangold has made some great movies ("Ford Versus Ferrari is fucking fantastic and doesn’t get talked about enough). But Scorsese would’ve been the one for Cop Land. Ensembles rarely go well unless the director is an absolute boss. Cop Land, for its potential, was a miss.

Maybe switch Sly and Deniro roles. I dunno. Even then, I don’t think the director had the chops for a movie like that. Rapaport is also terrible in it for being a driving plot line.

EDIT and Heat is fine. Seems like far too many are calling it close to the greatest movie ever while most are like, eh, it’s good but far too long. The Moby soundtrack is pretty cheesy. Pacino is amusing in how over the top he is, but that doesn’t mean he was good (leaving out that he was on cocaine the entire time is a poor edit). I doubt I’ll ever watch it again. The gifs and memes are enough. It’s no Cruising.

zackster Not the best movie ever, but it doesn’t pretend to be

The hype machine at the time would beg to differ. Remember people saying Sly should’ve got an Oscar because he ate a load of pies for the role.

It’s a wholly disappointing film given the ingredients.

On a forum populated by adult men queuing up for Eternals 2, dressed in full regalia, I think it is a bit silly to debate the quality of films like Heat and Cop Land.

jonattonyeah The Moby soundtrack is pretty cheesy.

I’ve seen you post this before and it’s a strange take. There’s 2 Moby tracks on a 21 track score. One of which (New Dawn Fades) is actually a New Order cover. God Moving over the face of Waters is his only track on there and its a brilliant fit for the ending. It’s really an Elliot Goldenthal soundtrack and its up there for me.

Agreed. I am no Moby fan, but I absolutely love the Heat soundtrack.

zackster yeah the atmospheric stuff on there is great, like this one

The Terje Rypdal stuff on there is class too

Agreed. It makes the movie unique for the genre and is part of why I said I think it gets better with age.

I also like that they cut all the scene of Al railing lines because its more fun to think he is just some super insane guy.

Maybe it’s just that iconic last scene that sticks in my head. RETRACTED COMMENT!

For me, the bottom line re: Heat is this: Michael Mann only makes BANGERS.
