I’m not actually sure that it should be a school’s responsibility to teach life skills if I’m honest.
Truss (general uk sucks thread)
Along_the_Wire I’m not actually sure that it should be a school’s responsibility to teach life skills if I’m honest.
Going to boarding school in the mean streets (countryside) of West Sussex made me the man I am today.
Along_the_Wire Agreed, you’ll get the same results as you do now anyway. Imagine being told about mortgages and soft skills when you’re trying to concentrate on your next Tik Tok or the tits on the teacher. At 14 you could care less about adults telling you how important grown up stuff is.
The best investment is the one you make in yourself Millsy.
I should have been a life coach.
Millsy It’ll defo pique interest but most (not all) will just file it under ‘boring Maths’ and you’ll get the same results anyway.
I think it would take more than just teaching it, it would have to be presented in a way that is appealing to young teenagers, what that would look like I don’t know but the vast majority of teens nowadays find it hard to study and take any interest in subjects given the distraction of social media and what they’re friends are doing. I see it first hand. The modern curriculum which is as old as the hills doesn’t work for most unfortunately, kids should do less subjects and build over time, the workload they have nowadays is far too much and they burn out and lose interest way too fast.
Along_the_Wire Interesting take on it, if school shouldn’t prepare you for real life, then what should it’s purpose be?
To give you a myriad of nepotistic connections.
Hursty schools don’t teach you to talk, walk, or wipe your arse, I expect a school to provide education, not life skills.
Along_the_Wire It depends how you define education, I assume you take the traditional view, which is broken imo.
Hursty It’s not about how I define education, it’s about what is a parent’s responsibility and what isn’t. I get that some parents are complete thicket cunts who don’t give a fuck, but the majority are responsible adults who are more than capable of helping with life skills. I realise I might sound like some kind of Tory cunt here, apologies if so.
I tried to catch up with this thread just now but my eyes started bleeding.
I love this from the bbc today:
Karishma Neog, an IT professional based in Bristol, has a weakness for designer handbags. In the first week of January she ordered two, one for her and one as a present, from a retailer in Paris, spending £600 plus £25 for delivery.
When they arrived she was charged an extra £123.
Why was she charged?
As with Sascha’s cars, the charge was probably for UK VAT. But because Karishma’s handbags were worth more than £135 she wasn’t charged when she clicked to buy. Michelle Dale from accountants UHY Hacker Young says the other possibility is that Karishma was charged customs duties. "It’s quite possible that the retailer thought to themselves, hang on, here’s this person ordering multiple versions of the same £300 handbag, she’s clearly got money. I mean how many knock-off designer French handbags can one person possibly need? Why not stick another £120 on the price and call it a Brexit tax? Fucking mongs they are, honestly
"
alistair We already had the best deal of any country in the bloc. Out of Shengen, out of the Euro Total country of our borders if we choose to use our powers (look at the mess created by C19 for an example) how we saw fit. Total control of how many refugees we let into the country and if we wanted to repatriate them, the rebate, Veto over any proposed laws., yet we retained all the benefits of membership regardless.
Do you know what Cameron was asking for when he went to the EU to ask for more?
