Clearly too much wine yesterday afternoon / evening
Overrated bands
I remember the Britpop wars actually. In our school, everyone was Oasis (being a northern school) except me and a few others who wanted to be contrarian and were Blur fans.
So, a bunch of parochial knuckle draggers who liked music for simpletons versus a smaller group of pretentious wankers.
I’d say the few Pulp fans were normal in comparison. (might have been different in Ireland, though)
Mad_Cyril Eh? Who has over-rated The Lightening Seeds?
Oasis
Albarn is a genius and therefore Blur get a pass from me. To be honest, I steered clear of every band during the Britpop explosion and just stuck to Renaissance CDs and Essential Mixes. I hated pre-club bar music for that very reason, seeing cunts losing their shit to Park Life gives me the chills to this very day.
The whole brit pop era was fucking embarrassing.
I also vividly remember some absolute shamrag singing Chumbawumba’s only hit at the top of his lungs in a nightclub, popping like like Vanilla Ice during his “routine” and perpetrating this heinous crime right at the intersection of the dance floor and highway to the bar so everyone would see him. I wish I did something to stop it at the time.
Britpop was cringey. It wasn’t a particularly exciting time for indie music either
Along_the_Wire Grant, presumably all those people who bought their records and gave them about 5 top 10s.

bosstrabs Popularity isn’t over-rating is it? Kyle Minogue isn’t over-rated and she’s had a load shitty hits.
Overrated in the sense that some people rate them, and that is too many.
Super Furry Animals?
Reef?
Super Furry Animals were great. Particularly Gruff Ryhs’ techno sets in the middle of their gigs that bewildered all the indie kids.
I never got into the them, in that, i never listened to any of their stuff but I did work with lads who would book tickets to see them months in advance. Packing campers and off they’d go. They seemed to have a Grateful Dead like cult following.
John Digweed – Renaissance - The Mix Collection Part 2
Some decent albums here and there, but I never really got the Arctic Monkeys. Never understood The Killers too much either.
As LB said, the question itself is useless without first defining what overrated means.
To me it’s any band which slips into the popular consciousness without the musicianship to back it up. Usually it’s because said band got lucky - right place at the right time.
Often much worse when compared to the peer group but successfully marketed for a more mainstream audience.
The Chemical Brothers spring to mind.
