mono-stereo A good engineer would of stayed up there and botched a workaround (ie give her a pair of cans and point at where the crossfader is

I don’t know why she’d been trying to use sync to begin with anyway - it’s not as if she was actually trying to mix any of the tracks together on beat.

mono-stereo , but fair play to her she carries on and attempts to explain the problem with a bit of humility

Yeah, though also after the first couple of times jumping on the mic to explain what was going on not sure she had to keep doing it between every single track.

I don’t suppose most of you have ever heard about the only other time I think Grimes has ever done a streamed “DJ set”?

In 2013 she played at a Boiler Room show filmed at a pool party in Richie Hawtin’s Ibiza villa - yes you heard that right. She was just playing tunes from her laptop - including the infamous moment below.

Boiler Room deleted her set from Youtube a few days later, and the below is the only existing clip of her set online. It’s pretty baffling that the set got removed and has never been re-uploaded since; maybe at the time Boiler Room thought it was too uncool or not underground enough for their image, but if anything now it would be the reverse. Or maybe copyright issues? Regardless it would have had millions of views by now I’m sure. There have been lots of people who have tried to lobby Boiler Room to put it back online but to no success.

Richie Hawtin’s set from the end of the same party/Boiler Room stream is still online though and Grimes can be seen occasionally dancing in the background:

SM001 I guess, but their primary job is to sell tickets. The results reflect on them obviously, although I’m sure they won’t be hurting next year because of whatever happened, but maybe they assumed she’s put in the most minimal effort to be semi-competent?

303abuser I’m sure they won’t be hurting next year

Idk about that. Supposedly attendance was down by like 30,000

zackster Good. Seems like over-commercialized garbage, but what do I know, I’m old and mostly boring now.

Looks like it’s more like 50,000. Seems like there was a real disconnect between the promoters and the festival attendees. Blur getting booed off stage and the Anime Singer not being able to appear in hologram form as two non Grimes examples.

I guess that’s the inevitable timeline when you overcharge, oversell, and the acts are mostly shit.

They are booking Blur and Will Smith for a bunch of zoomers who want to see Tyler the Creator. Bunch of Gen X idiots running it I would guess.

mono-stereo I dunno, I’ve just seen another video and she just doesn’t know what she’s doing at all. Rekordbox is a solid bit of kit - it might get the bpm wrong now and again, but I’ve had it happen maybe twice in years. She doesn’t know what she’s doing at all. She can’t even play a song unmixed it some parts. Maybe someone was being malicious, but I dunno about that.

Along_the_Wire I’ve just seen another video and she just doesn’t know what she’s doing at all.

Oh it’s this 100%. She didn’t know how to use the CDJs and wasn’t familiar with the tunes. This is a person who was kept locked in Elon’s basement whilst being repeatedly impregnated. Add in her clear autism and it’s not a total shock that she would turn up unprepared and not think it would be an issue.

Along_the_Wire Rekordbox is a solid bit of kit - it might get the bpm wrong now and again, but I’ve had it happen maybe twice in years.

Again, as I explained above the likely issue is not with Rekordbox’s analysis per se - but rather that the tempo range in settings given for it to analyse the tunes was set as being too low/narrow, eg 80-140 bpm, meaning say a tune at 160 would not be marked as 160 but rather as 80.

Along_the_Wire Maybe someone was being malicious, but I dunno about that.

I doubt that as well, but whoever put the tunes in to Rekordbox for her missed something. It maybe would make sense if it had been her Tale of Us bf, as I doubt any of his tunes ever normally go high at all and so his default analysis settings could have had the narrow tempo range.

zackster She didn’t know how to use the CDJs and wasn’t familiar with the tunes.

Yeah she doesn’t know how to use the CDJs, but around half of the tunes were hers.

hugopal Yeah, maybe, but there’s no reason to have a restrictive bpm range is there? I don’t see the point, even if you mix in a restrictive bpm range like Tale of Us maybe does. Even so, it’s still shite, she should’ve at least taken a few minutes to run through some bits to check - going in that cold is absurd given the circumstance ie 50,000 people and not have a clue how to DJ

Along_the_Wire Yeah, maybe, but there’s no reason to have a restrictive bpm range is there?

I dont have Rekordbox to check myself, but I saw somewhere that supposedly the factory default setting is 75-155pm.

Along_the_Wire she should’ve at least taken a few minutes to run through some bits to check

              Sure.

I thought autism was a super power?

hugopal I have tunes with 175bpm in my library and they sit there as that and I haven’t touched the setting. Anyway, it’s possible that it was changed - she kept talking about how shit she was at math, but fuck me, dividing numbers by 2 is only just beyond my mentally disabled brother.
