The mind really does boggle with this project, all this money for a slightly faster train in 2040 which may even be in obsolete by 2050.

Imagine the world 30 years from now, is a 200mph train really going to cut it? The french have already had the technology 30 years ago!

I really do think the cash should be going into research and development, coupled with the rampant advances of work from technology and apps in the cloud, does the requirement for thousands of people a day to reach London stack up in the future?

Hursty It’s already obsolete… I can’t find one angle to be positive about it, it’s the ultimate Tory white elephant.

Current estimates have the total cost coming in at over £80 billion. You could research, design and build a Hyperloop running from Brighton to Inverness for half that.

ScottBailey fair point. Too much riding on our fair capital city I suppose. But the pandemic will mean an exodus of people demanding home working contracts given most operations have woken up to the fact you don’t need a massive real estate footprint in central London to keep in the butter.

Along_the_Wire it’s strange because I’d take the commute now over 6 months ago any day of the week. Yeah, there’s many ignorant plebs (generally wearing Sports Direct tracksuits) on the trains refusing to wear facemasks, but compared to having some sweaty, middle aged man’s pit in your face at 6am, I’m quite comfortable with my commute now!

Along_the_Wire Its such a tough call for businesses. Surely most will be moving to hot desk type facilities with only the odd day in work anyway?

My brother polled his company, half wanted to come back half wanted to stay at home, with the end result being you have to be in for 2 days a week when required.

Hursty I’m obviously jealous of those who are able to work from home, but at the same time it’s probably a good time for companies to cut the wheat from the chaff. This day and age should serve as notice to work harder than ever imo. I’m not “proud” of it, but I even worked a couple of Sunday’s in my business to show willing. Some people’s work ethic has definitely been called into question recently.

Hursty I worked at home 3 days out of 5. Worked great for me and wonders for the company. Productivity is the measure.
