The Substance (2024)

Probably the first 18 rated movie I’ve seen in the cinema for a while. As @Homegrove has said above it’s batshit nuts. Beyond the obvious Dorian Gray analogy, there are nods to Kubrick and Stephen King’s Carrie. It’s stylistic and slick but the themes don’t really get explored at all; there’s little in the way/ if any of meaningful dialogue, and at two and half hours could’ve done without the 3rd act IMO. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen this year but I’m not sure that necessarily makes it any good. Hard to give it a rating as it starts so well but ultimately disappoints massively, but it passed the time I guess.

Okay film, Clooney and Pitt work well on screen, not sure why there hasn’t been more of them together over the years, this doesn’t quite know how serious to take itself though. I assume the title is a nod to Pulp Fiction?

Love Lies Bleeding (2024)

After the absolute shit-shows that were Underwater (2020) and Spencer (2021) I was seriously considering an outright ban on anything starring Kristen Stewart (The Twighlight Saga excepted, obviously) - but the high ratings for this and the fact that it was directed by critically-acclaimed Rose Glass made me curious. Plus it was about bodybuilding lesbians, which is definitely one of my favourite genres. The opening scene sets the mood perfectly with a track by Harald Grosskopf and I instantly knew this would be Stewart’s redemption. She was perfect.

Well the new Salem’s Lot sucked. My wife fell asleep 40 minutes into it, and I didn’t mind this time because she really wasn’t missing anything. I wanted Barlow from the novel, and this one had pretty much copied the look from the 1979-version instead.

Tombstone (1993)

Don’t think I’ve been let down on a film so much since I watched Interstellar.

Went into this expecting a gritty Western. Came out annoyed I’d wasted 2 hours.

It felt like a parody at times (guns getting fired left right and centre and people hardly blinking?). And the music/soundtrack was terrible.

Day off work so went to see The Substance with the missus at the local Picturehouse. Really liked it. Although could have done without the last 20 minutes.

A few weeks back I watched the other Coralie Fargeat film “Revenge” which, even though it is mental in parts, I think is the better of the two films.

The Witch (2015). First time watching. Bit of a mission statement to have this be your first film. I believe it is Robert Eggers’. I’m watching all of his movies before Nosferatu comes out, only seen The Northman previously.

I thought this was amazing.

Strange Darling 2023

This is an original, subversive movie that you need to go into blind and you kind of need to pay attention and stay with it. It’s so clever that I never even realised how clever it was until I thought about it later. What makes it really great though is the acting. And that ending.
