Watched the 1st Dune and really enjoyed it. No real fluff, just straight to the point. Really liked the ominous score too. 7.5/10.

The Fall Guy (2024). I needed a silly hangover-movie for my NYE hangover, and this one did the job. I was surprised I liked this more than my wife, I’ve really been striking out with my choices to watch with her lately. Yet she refuses to pick a film.

Carlito’s Way. One of Pacino’s less shouty roles and Sean Penn’s barnet steals the show. Lots of lines that have been sampled across the dance music spectrum over the years. Probably my fifth watch of this and it still stands up. 7/10

The Holdovers

Didn’t realise this was gonna lean into the post Brat Pack / New England collegiate vibe quite so much… The 80s Universal intro and the attempts to make the digital shooting look like film (failed because shooting in 4k or more just makes everything too crisp; just shoot film on old cameras) are a bit on the nose, but otherwise it was enjoyable enough. I’m not sure it hit all the high notes of some of the films it was trying to emulate though. Giamatti is as good as ever.

I quite enjoyed this albeit giving it some grace at various times.

Small Things Like These (2024)

Cillian Murphy plays a taciturn coal merchant in Ireland who chucks his bags coal around all day then comes home and scrubs his hands and eats his dinner with his wife and daughters. That’s pretty much it, other than stuff that would be a spoiler.

This is a beautifully observed, quiet little gem of film.
