Nosferatu - Decent but it’s a very straight faced telling of the story. Looks amazing and is Egger’s most accessible, co-herent film but I was hoping for some bonkers ‘The Lighthouse’ style creativity which isn’t there. 7.5 plague rats / 10

We watched two films tonight. The new Wallace & Gromit on Netflix was great, but I doubt I’ll return to it even if I’ve watched Wrong Trousers (for which this is a sequel) and the Were Rabbit loads of times. Laughed a lot though.

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). A first watch for both myself and the wife. I understand this is a beloved dad-film, and I can understand why. Masterfully edited, the 2,5 hour runtime didn’t bother us at all, the movie flows so nicely. A massive supporting cast of UK “that guy” actors. I’ll have to look most of them up from IMDB to know where I’ve seen them.

Dan having a surround sound at home was nice, great sound design. I cranked up the volume when it became apparent in the first battle.

Looking forward to seeing my first Eggers movie in the cinema… thankfully nosferatu playing Friday onwards. Wish I got to see Northman in there, would have been epic.

Blue Velvet (1986). Back to Lynch with this one. I’ve seen it before, but it was so long ago this was practically a first watch. Only thing I could remember was the ear, and the scene with Kyle McLachlan in the closet while Dennis Hopper sexually assaulted Isabella Rosselini. Sick stuff. Some TV executive watched this and told David Lynch sure, we’ll give you a prime time TV show.

Incidentally I’ve always imagined Dermo is like Hopper’s character in this in day to day life.

To me the [floor] flaw in it was why someone would create a better version of themselves, if they didn’t have any of the experiences that the better version had. Instead they would be just in coma inside a cupboard for 5 days out of every 10.

Watched Perfect Blue last night for the second time (first was in college, 20+ years ago). Easily one of the best anime movies out there, way ahead of its time too. Up there with Akira in terms of quality. A packed 80 mins with a couple of grim scenes that will make you intensely uncomfortable. A strong 9 out of 10, and would recommend to everyone, even if you aren’t an anime dweeb.

Election: First time watching this, mostly because I was surprised that it’s Alexander Payne. The poster does it no favours (looks like some sort rom com high school mean girls type movie). Everything about it is late 90s vibes, don’t think they would have gotten away with the stuff that happens to a 16+ year old Reese in the first 20 mins. It has its moments, the script and acting is strong, but overall it’s a bit of a borefest and the main issue is you don’t really feel anything for the characters, unlike About Schmidt, Sideways and Holdovers. Humour is missing for sure, and at our age not worth the time. 6.2 / 10

Lone Star.

I remember watching this when it was first on TV here, this is a 1996-film so must’ve been 1998 or 1999. I remembered loving it, but when Criterion released it it was too expensive to go on that memory (you can’t stream this here, not even rental, US and UK you can get it in 4K in the AppleTV-store). So when Criterion-sale happened in Europe too in November I bought this right away.

Finally watched it tonight. I was remembering right. An amazing film, just about perfect in every way. And the 4K transfer is absolutely gorgeous too. Can’t beat a movie shot on film in Texas.

Along_the_Wire go see it for me. I was hoping for some screenings here too, but nope. Will have to settle for the 4K Blu ray of the new restauration. I’ve heard it looks amazing.

Along_the_Wire I watched this on the week of its release on a Sunday night iirc – packed cinema and the only film I think I’ve seen where there was absolute silence for some of it, no one dared even breathe
