I always used to ‘take the Guardian’ as one who is not necessarily staunchly left-wing would say, to avoid being pejoratively stereotyped a ‘Guardian reader’. I still do actually, but read The Economist as well (which is its own myopic idealistic worldview too at times, albeit a slightly different one, seeming to believe that unfettered global trade and free markets are the answer to every problem)

      bosstrabs It’s has become a joke. It seems to always be finding a hyperbolic angle where one doesn’t need to be ie if covid deaths are low, it barely gets a mention and instead focussed on total deaths passing 40,000. Fucking winds me up

        Not even close to full. But all schools, libraries, museums etc closed, everyone who could worked from home, the Helsinki-region was locked from the rest of the country for two weeks, and bars and restaurants closed for two months. Take out and deliveries was allowed though.

            I went to work normally the whole time, with the bus too for the first month or so.

            Homegrove If I had Bezos like money, I would put together “Discover Finland!” packages in all of the rural south and mid west. Plane tickets paid for in full, all you have to do is prove you have “Finnish ancestors” aka be white. I’d hang signs around the local hangouts in Hog-Shit Missouri that read “Come to Finland. Puerto Rican population 0!” and such. Have ads in Gunz and Grillz magazine that say something like “The only black thing about Finland is the 18hour hellish winter nights!” The years of Hannu saying “Just vote for Jeb Bush’s Cuban son, Zack. I know he’s not Bernie, but he’s a democrat now. That’s the best you can hope for!” would all seem worth it.

                  324 people dead from Covid 19. Population 5,5 million. I’d say that’s decent.

                    9,000 committed suicide in the same time period. Swings and roundabouts.

                      Why is the suicide rate so high out there? Surely it can’t be lack of Vit D can it!

                        Just 94 covid cases in the London area of the last week and deaths converging to zero. If it wasn’t for the Brexit voting Tory voting hotspots of the North and elsewhere, London would have had its lockdown lifted. As it stands no way the Tories would let resentment build in those parts of the country…

                        With the Finns under lockdown, church attendance has dropped to alarmingly low levels.

                        On the other hand, no-one is burning them down so…
