Hannu, have you done The Town rewatchables? Listened to it again the other day. It’s just so good. The last bit about Bawwwstan history is a riot.

Russillo’s pod is mostly sports that are likely no interest to you, but the end bit is “Life Advice” where he answers readers’ questions. It’s pretty fucking funny if you’re looking for a 20 minute escape here and there.

I’ve also been listening to The Big Picture with Sean Fennessey - decent enough, though I find Amanda Dobbins or whatever her name is quite grating.

Finished off Dune Messiah, has its moments, the themes of power are interesting, but nothing too special. There’s a noir element in this too, but in terms of plot mechanics it kinda gets lost. Frank Herbert really knows how to build to a climax in both books, and loves an abrupt ending right after. Though this ending wasn’t as bizarre are Dune.

Spoiled Children of Dune and just wiki’d the plot summary right after. Not sure if I’m going to regret that in the long run but I’m done committing to this series. It’s pretty much all downhill for Paul Atreides eh.

I just finished Version Zero by David Yoon and The Maidens by Alex Michaelides, neither of which I could strongly recommend despite being perfectly serviceable, but also The Whisper Man by Alex North which was both most excellent and a Richard & Judy Book Club pick so, yeah, those guys know their shit apparently.

Have now got House on Fire by Joseph Finder and Recursion by Blake Crouch on the go.

Once I’m done with Johnny Marr’s memoir, which is excellent btw, I’ll be moving onto this… a book about a woman’s experiences in an open relationships… a bit of titillation for the fuzzy tingle times at night 🤓

Finally getting through this. It’s really good. Goes all the way back to the early 20th Century. Really puts things in context.

I’ve been reading Iain M. Banks’ scifi books in order of appearence, and loved the first 4. The fifth (Against a Dark Background) I almost gave up on several times. I knew his later stuff isn’t apparently as good as the first ones, but I hope this isn’t the start of the decline already.

I’m also reading the non Culture-ones, of which Against Dark Background was the first. Feersum Endjinn is next, but I’m rereading King’s The Tommyknockers in between. Excession is his 7th book, and 5th on the Culture-series, so that comes after Feersum. Loved all Culture-books, Player of Games especially.

Always think of it as the weakest of the lot, simply because he hadn’t quite worked it all out. Excession might be my fave, simply because it’s full of mad AI characters and general oddness.
