2002 into 2003 had my formative years of Prog but also a unique flavour of Techno that was funky, upbeat and industrial. It was so unique at the time.

Dubman hearts pounding

Yup. We used to call them “rave jitters”. That feeling in your stomach as you’re on your way, knowing you’re going to be mashed and having a blast in a few hours.

jonattonyeah That anxious excitement when using public transport on the way in - I can still remember that feeling.

Did you all always have your set driver? My guy Brett had his mother’s minivan and could drive under any circumstance. Legend. Took us everywhere.

jonattonyeah We never set it up ahead of time, but took stock at the end of the night on who was least munted. If we were all too far gone, we called a cab (or walked to a place where one would actually pick us up lol)

        jonattonyeah
My best mate used to drive a few of us in bosses work motor. He used to drive all over in it. His boss never knew.

Cabs were never an option for us. These parties were out in weird industrial neighborhoods of Oakland and San Francisco. They wouldn’t come out there. Plus Brett could pile 8 people in that thing. It was great.

jonattonyeah There were a lot of empty warehouses in St. Louis, and the cops MOSTLY looked the other way, so we weren’t ever too far from somewhere we could catch a taxi. However the raves in fields….we did try to make sure at least one person wasn’t too fucked up to get us to civilization lol

            Kells77

Yeah we were lucky. Brett was a fucking machine. He could’ve driven an F1 race car on 6 rollers.

Who was that DJ/producer from STL that was on GU? Smight or something?

jonattonyeah Smight was from Texas I think. I’m trying to think about any other producers that would have been on the board. I know some, but they weren’t GU regulars, moreso on 4Four. My friend Drew was pretty prolific for a while…his dj/producer name is Butane, and he’s from the St. Louis area, although he moved away several years ago.

                Kells77

Ahh that’s right. And I’m familiar with Butane! Haven’t heard anything from him in a while.

jonattonyeah Yeah, after he moved to the east coast for a while, we lost touch, so I’m not really sure what he’s been up to lately either.

jonattonyeah we mostly sorted it out with public transport, but i remember one time a friends dad who was pretty cool picked us up from a semi-rural area at 9 am. the floors were red at the beginning of the night, our pants were up to our knees with a pink, caked-on plaster like substance. the look on his face at the state of us was priceless. 🤣

                  ArchimedesQ …blimey yes!

In fact, most of my memories are of the last 20mins/half hour when the lights went up and the big piano tunes came out… everyone dancing on the tables.

This one takes me right back there:

…there’s a bloke in that last pic that looks like me, sent it to a few mates and they all agree, it’s got to the point that its freaking me out and I can’t look at it anymore
