The Climate Change Thread
Had a look at their website, nothing on there which talks about a strategy. Interestingly there is a quote on the homepage from Sir David King, the chief sceintific advisor to the government which states we have 3-4 years to get a grip of climate change
He has just been quoted by the Guardian talking about the Greek wildfires “If you are in one of these very warm areas and you haven’t got air conditioning indoors you could suffer terribly – many people will die from heat stress.”
So, more air con required David?

Blessed are the cheese makers
Bit high brow for here but Just Stop Oil were on the Moral maze on R4 this week. I have to say that I switched off after the JSO founder and then a GB news Christian.
I think the main thing we need to turn down is the rhetoric and turn up the action.
benson What is the action to be taken? Most people carry on with their lives regardless because fundamentally the leaders don’t give a shit, we have no real climate action from the top down.
No restrictions on fossil fuel advertising, no laws forcing house builders to install solar/heat pumps, no restrictions on travel, no real agriculture reform, incessant consumerism and all the pollution that goes with it grows exponentially each year, the list goes on
Even though the UK claims to give a shit, the biggest actors like, China/USA never sign up to any agreements to reduce fossil fuel use, so there is never any real traction globally.
Hursty Its not the cause I have issue with, or even the tactics. Its the language of saying that governments are complicit in mass murder. The reverend guy was GB news and saying that he thought climate change had become an industry rather than actual action, whilst at the same time seeming to deny it was man made. He then went on about ‘genocide’ in relation to abortion laws.
Its unhelpful in my view. I happen to think we really do need to do something about it. Not just climate change, but consumerism in general, the constant push to make and buy more stuff. There is something slightly rotten at the core with that.

I’m inclined to agree. Read some article a hole back saying the earth is fucked with twenty years. Thank fuck I’m 52 and a half.

This isn’t innovative thinking, and I happen to think the same.
Thinking and doing are different though, likely we could both do more.

Economic growth is the enemy of game changing action on climate change (and no, I am not a denier or a doomsday-monger). Pity governments didn’t borrow massively to invest in the transition to green energy five years ago when interest rates were at record lows. Layering extra taxes on the hard pressed in an acute cost of living crisis is a recipe for disaster.
Call me pessimistic, but our economic system is completely misaligned with societal and environmental good. There’s no fixing this without massive pain. There’s no political or economic will to do what’s necessary and corporations will watch the world burn before doing the right thing.
Tremendous foresight, cap doffed
Plus kids are brutally annoying, so it’s a win-win.
Lol in terms of consideration, annoyance was one step above environmental impact.

JSO have been pranked at a party they held for themselves.
If we’ve only got 3-4 years left, we should travel and fly as much as we can.
Go down with some bloody good memories.
