Bandcamp acquired by Epic Games….
Might not be good, hopefully it’s unnoticeable.
Faaahhccckkk. If Bandcamp goes the way of Beatport were all doomed.
hugopal On the surface the Beatport UI is great. But i’ve had purchases duplicate, crates i’ve updated reverting to older versions and ‘My Beatport’ randomly missing artists / labels on any given day causing me to miss releases. I haven’t purchased anything from the site in well over a year because I don’t trust it anymore. I emailed them approx a year ago and they said they were aware of these issues but i’ve seen zero improvement since then.
Bandcamp: If this new investment upgrades their UI, features and attracts more labels while maintaining it’s current price structure whilst keeping its current artist and label users then great.
Beatport messed up my account and I can’t recover via email as that email is long dead. Having to start my follows from scratch. A right pain. Well at least I can get rid of the likes of ADID, Booka Shade, Bedrock, and other labels/artists I haven’t had interest in for like 15 years but never bothered to unfollow.
call me a pessimist, but when was the last time a large corporate entity did anything that benefited artists? add 40% chinese ownership and i’m expecting this to turn out poorly.

Bandcamp in a bit of a pickle apparently.

Wally not sure about that - who uses bandcamp’s app version at the moment anyway?
And it seems they’d have been hit by Google’s attempts at taking an extortionate percentage cut from the app payments whether they’d been bought by Epic or not.
In fact, now that Epic is using them to help fight their case against Google, they have more chance of potentially winning and ultimately doing everyone in a favour in getting Google’s enforced ‘Google Pay’ in the app scheme scrapped.
The main thing it does suggest though is that Epic bought bandcamp largely for the sake of this legal case, meaning they might not be particularly interested in either investing much in it, or changing and potentially ruining it.
