My favourite Dom Phillips sleeve notes moment was in the Melbourne GU when he told us “Feral is an Australian word meaning messy” (or something like that)
Yes Dom, the word ‘feral’ was invented by Australians and that’s what it means.

No one deserves to exit like that. Horrible. RIP Dom.
RIP. I hope he’s in disco hell dancing to all those ace DT basslines.
I doubt he’s listening to Wally Lopez’s effort.
RIP Dom
Poor bastard. RIP fella.
All music scenes are loaded with journalists, yet I really can’t think of anyone else from inside the electronic scene other than Dom who actually made a lasting impression on me. Journalists are dog shit, and hurt scenes more than anything, but still Dom seemed to be a good egg and all of his writing was very positive and descriptive. I was reading his booklet notes 5-6 years before I was able to set foot in an actual nightclub. There was no YouTube or IG at the time, so all of my concepts of what clubbing was actually like came from Mixmag, Muzik, Dj, Jockeyslut, URB, ex… but nothing really stacked up to Dom’s “you could call it trance, but I call it magic” flowery pros. I absolutely lapped it up, and gen speaking it has aged well. If you read notes to releases like Nick Warren Amsterdam he was clearly spreading the last of the butter over 6 pieces of toast, but even so the B list releases got his full attention, which speaks to his character. Such afucking shame, especially when you factor in what he died doing. It’s not like he crashed his personal prop plane whilst being a wealthy shithead. Am very sad about this.
Well said that man.
Genuinely saddened by this, such a pointless waste of life. That’ll be a tough one on the family and not just because of the circumstances, the culprit being some jungle gypsy who’ll probably thrive in prison out there. It’ll be hard to gain a sense of justice.
I looked forward to his sleeve notes on every release, just as Zackster mentioned, he painted a great picture with words on the cities and mixes he worked on.
A tragic and infuriating end to a great career. RIP.
When I first bought Mixmag it was an indie/underground magazine that was almost completely unknown.I had to order it from the newsagents because it wasn’t known to them. When Dom took over he updated it and presented it to the masses. How it looked , how it read, how it then centred on making the djs the stars really was his doing. Before that the djs weren’t the centre of attention the artists were.
He was massively influential. Losing him like this seems cruel and unjust. I really hope the UK djs recognise him in a big way. I don’t like the way Sasha never hardly recognises people who’ve died who he’s made a living out of playing their music unlike diggers who always does.
Sasha would definitely not have been shot into the limelight and superstardome without Dom so if he doesn’t do something big he’ll be a bit of a tosser.
Cankles-McJeggings I don’t like the way Sasha never hardly recognises people who’ve died who he’s made a living out of playing their music unlike diggers who always does.
Agreed. Scott Hardkiss comes to mind.
Can barely remember anything specific, but the writing in those booklets were a big part of the GU experience. Hype or not, he really made you believe the sounds you were reading about represented the cities.
Terrible way to go.
Kinda surprised there has barely been any public statements from the DJs, particularly S&D. Wasnt it Dom who coined Sasha the Son of God, which helped propel his career to super stardom? Remember him complaining about it in jest in one of the GU video interviews.
Moaning about DJs not making BIG statements on their social media? Fucking hell, that is not something anybody needs to do when tragic circumstances arise. Cop the fuck on. If anything, its the naffest thing someone can do. Up there with narcissists who post “Happy Birthday Nana” on media their Nana will never see, just so everyone can see how “caring” they are. I’m sure S&D have enough class to make their feelings known through private channels.
