  • Random Mixed Comp Poll Made Without Prejudice or Agenda

You enter a rental car / airbnb / mate's flat / whatever... there is no cell reception or FM single. Which one you reaching for?

GU 007
Balance 005

GU007 sounds very dated nowadays.

Perfecto Fluoro stands up much better as a historic Oakey comp.

Actually, Balance 005 sounds very dated too, in that it was a snapshot of a brief period when James Holden was ‘listenable’.

As soon as i sit down in the rental car, i slide my drivetime anthems cd in the player and go straight for ace of spades, z!

Lack of Disk 2 option will be the death of this thread.

Bloody hell. Not again. I always wonder when people start this particular thread, do they ever think, have we done this one before? And they think, no, this is worth a punt. Those with concussion that is.

bosstrabs It is but even at the time, it had its own border community sound and some unique tracks instead of being prog anthems du jour. The Wheel, written as a transition track is just ridiculous. 007 is just anthems mashed together and piss in comparison.

All we’re missing is Jonathan Yeah to write an honest appraisal of both discs for the full groundhog day effect.

        “GU007 and Balance005 RANKED!!”

I miss jonateewhyaye. Play the last post at sundown every day in memorium.

Disc 1 of Balance 005 is fantastic, I was so surprised at how good it was at the time. Still holds up. But disc 2 is a bit weak, albeit with a few great tracks.

GU007 is an all time classic though. Not fussed about the mixing etc, it’s all about the great tracks on both discs .

Always thought 007 was a mix of some good tracks badly put together. Sure I remember hearing Oakey fucked up the mix so bad they had to get some guy in the office to do it, which sounds about right.

Never listened to the balance mix as the essential mix was enough to put me off listening to him ever again. He clearly didn’t know what he was doing. Have been tempted to listen to it after the comments on here, but when some of those people really rate 007 it does make me think I’d be wasting my time.

Balance 5 was amazing at the time. Agree it has aged somewhat but still a great example of the mixed comp genre

LT42 bit of a joke pal. Don’t get your knickers in a twist over it.

            @zackster
I‘m listening to CD2 of Hong Kong whilst reviewing end of year reports.

            Can I change my vote?

Mad_Cyril just had that on in the car as it happens. Disc 1 is great until the final track. Disc 2 is MID but still enjoyable.
