Dan Martin McDonagh just not had it in him to make a good picture since In Bruges. I hated Seven Psychopaths, thought Billboards was bad, and acting aside felt this was useless.

Wolfs on Apple TV+ was alright, but would have been bad if the leads were not Pitt and Clooney. Their combined charm can do a lot.

The Master (2012). Continuing with my PTA watchthrough. Pretty great, if too long for what story it had. Amazing acting, Philip Seymor Hoffman was so good. PIGFUCK!

It’s an okay film, but it’s so fuckin refreshing because it stays true to the original and doesn’t overreach, or try to be something it’s not. It’s worth watching because nobody makes films like this now. It’s worth watching because it’s not Marvel.

Trap (2024) 6/10

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest…He has a way of turning clever original screenplays into terrible movie adaptations (See ‘Old’ - which conceptually I thought was a great idea but execution was terrible). Decent turn from Josh Hartnett who seems to be getting typecast as a deranged Poundland Tom Cruise in recent outings (Black Mirror etc.). This is again a decent story which could have been done better by dropping fact that he’s the Butcher later in the movie and making it out that he’s a concerned parent trying to get out for a larger part. Second half is a let down.

The Substance (2024). Every comment I’ve read said you will not be ready for the third act. I thought I was. I was not. Is stopped eating my pop corn at about the 90 minute mark.

Truly fucking bonkers movie. Will be very interesting to see how it will do at the Oscars. Demi Moore is a sure nominee for best actress at least for sure.

I bought First Blood on 4K Blu ray, because I got it for 15 €. It’s always weird watching one of these VHS classics on modern technology. This looked like a completely different movie on UHD. Also forgot how good it is, I blame the later Rambo-movies for that. Apart from Richard Crenna going full ham it’s pretty much perfect. David Morrell’s novel it’s based on is still better though.

The Substance (2024)

Probably the first 18 rated movie I’ve seen in the cinema for a while. As @Homegrove has said above it’s batshit nuts. Beyond the obvious Dorian Gray analogy, there are nods to Kubrick and Stephen King’s Carrie. It’s stylistic and slick but the themes don’t really get explored at all; there’s little in the way/ if any of meaningful dialogue, and at two and half hours could’ve done without the 3rd act IMO. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen this year but I’m not sure that necessarily makes it any good. Hard to give it a rating as it starts so well but ultimately disappoints massively, but it passed the time I guess.
