ScottBailey LOL. Not my cuppa tea.
Disc 2s of Superior Quality
Obvs that’s normal for all commercial comps. There’s a scene in ‘Getting Away with It’ where the fatlads talk about (from memory) how they aren’t paying that much for a track for GU13.
There was also an interview with Sasha in one of the mags where he ran through each of the tracks on GU13 pre-release. It didn’t have Perception in the CD2 tracklist (obvs pre Notting Hill Carnival) and had this in its place
Uses the same key sounds as Zoe (and is Ibiza themed!) but Perception is Perception innit.
apyssjw thanks for that! I’ve always wondered what the original draft looked like, but fidn’t know Sasha had talked about it in a mag.
This track would have fit soo much better than C&S!

Dubman I like Perception, I just don’t think it follows Zoe very well. That Galaxy track after Zoe and before Fly works better in my opinion.
Also, Perception would have been great in replacement of Heaven Scent. Again, only my 2p.
Perception is a mint track
Said interview is in the youtube comments!
apyssjw nice one!
Oakey’s 007 is fucking brilliant and anyone who thinks otherwise is a mahoosive looser.

100%.
Loved Perception as a tune, but felt square peg / round hole at this point in the mix. Always felt it would have worked better at the end of the mix…
lol disc 1 of NY is so insane. It’s as if he’d never heard a single one of the records before, and had only just watched a 20 minute youtube video on how to dj with vinyl! before stepping into the booth. Every single transition is one of those ones that all budding djs remember where you don’t fully get it until you hear both records coming out of the speakers and you’re like ooh fuck these don’t work, and you quickly get out of the first and into the second as fast as you can. You also get at least one of those moments where you think both records are working, but get so stoked on yourself that you forget to use EQs, or any of the controls really, and the record you meant to mix out of just suddenly stops. iircc there is even one of those transitions were you just can’t get the bpm right, its always to fast or slow, and you hit that moment were the record that’s playing has gotten all the way to the point when it’s just a kick drum and your like aaah shit gotta get this on asap! So from a technical point of view, it is an astonishing mix, i will give you that.
Also Perception is a fantastic tune, and it’s placement is the mix is just fine. Xpander is what ruins the flow of that cd, period.
As an aside, I remember the Mixmag article about Cass that was in the copy that Planet Progressive came with. According to the article Sasha was waiting for a tune that Cass and Slide were working on before releasing Ibiza. Before they had finished it a lightning strike knocked out their hard drive, and they lost the tune. They broke the news to Sasha, but he said he wanted a track so badly, that they got back into the studio and made Perception.
Ibiza, disk 2… isn’t the crux of the argument, disk one vs disk two, the opening three tracks on disk two and how they just don’t work together? That they somehow tarnish the rest of the almost perfect mix? Others arguing it’s this eclectic ensemble that is at the heart of it’s brilliance?
If you went into a club and heard any other dj play breaks, into muscular house, into moody prog, you’d show yourself the door… wouldn’t you?
Things have currently devolved into the same old arguments. But fear not, I will be getting things back on track with my review of 007 Disc 2!
Whole thread is gold !
